Clarice Cliff’s bizarre life, and how it came to the big screen

The Colour Room is Sky Cinema’s latest release, due to be streamed and in cinemas this autumn.
Join Claire Peate, the film’s award-winning screenwriter, as she explores and reveals the incredible rags to riches story of Clarice Cliff, a lowly factory worker from The Potteries, who dared to not accept her station in life, and went on to became an Art Deco pioneer.

The Colour Room stars Matthew Goode (The Crown, Downton Abbey, The Imitation Game), David MorriseyKerry FoxAdrian RawlingsBill Paterson and Phoebe Dynevor, who played Daphne Bridgerton in Netflix’s 2020 worldwide hit Bridgerton, as Clarice Cliff. The Colour Room is directed by Claire McCarthy (The Luminaries, Ophelia).

The film follows the journey of a determined, working class woman, Clarice Cliff, as she breaks the glass ceiling and revolutionises the workplace in the 20th century.

Clarice Cliff (Dynevor) is a vivacious young factory worker in the industrial British midlands of the 1920s. Bursting at the seams with ideas for colours and shapes, Clarice takes more and more dangerous risks – but she manages to stay one step ahead of the workhouse and impress the eccentric factory owner Colley Shorter (Goode) on the way with her talent and innovation.

Claire Peate is a novelist and BAFTA Rocliffe winning scriptwriter. Originally from the Midlands, she’s excited to be relocating to Cornwall next year.
Claire will be interviewed by former BBC Radio Cornwall Presenter & Producer and writer Tim Hubbard.

In this fascinating talk, you’ll hear about Clarice’s struggles and scandals, and how the film came to be made in the middle of a pandemic.

There’s even a chance to discover what Clarice Cliff smelt like!

Barbara Dickson : ‘A Shirt Box Full Of Songs’

Barbara DicksonBarbara Dickson :  “A Shirt Box Full of Songs”
An Autobiography

Meet Barbara Dickson in an intimate setting where she describes her life through her recently re-published autobiography “A Shirt Box Full of Songs”.
From singing to the postman when she was less than two years old to her Sold-Out tours in the 2000s, Barbara Dickson has been captivating her fans for the best part of sixty years.

In her Autobiography, she describes the joys of growing up in Fife in the Fifties, of moving to Edinburgh at seventeen to find her place in the world and the struggles of trying to make a living on the Scottish folk scene.

Despite becoming Scotland’s bestselling solo artist in the 70sand 80sand with huge hits such as ‘I Know Him So Well’, with Elaine Paige and ‘Caravan Song’Barbara was not content to have just a successful singing career. She turned to another: Acting.

She appeared in Musical Theatre, making “Blood Brothers” and “Spend, Spend, Spend” her own.  Her time on stage earned her many acting accolades but her pursuit of ‘perfection’ lead to complete exhaustion from which she fought hard to recover in the 1980sand 1990s.

Barbara’s is a warm, fascinating story that encompasses the best of British music, stage and television and above all tells the story of an ordinary woman with an extraordinary voice.

Former BBC presenter, journalist & editor, Tim Hubbard, now a writer, lecturer & literary festival host, will be in conversation with Barbara about her remarkable life and career.

In the second half of the evening, Barbara will take questions from the audience, together with treating them to one or two of her favourite songs.

To round the evening off, Barbara will give a Book Signing of her Autobiography; the perfect souvenir of what promises to be a most special and memorable night.

Chris Difford : ‘Up The Junction’

Chris Difford

An evening that’s sure to be Cool For Cats!

He never thought it would happen…
Chris Difford
brings his ‘Up the Junction’ tour to the St Austell Arts Centre, providing a string of songs and stories from his incredible life on and off the road, with his band Squeeze.

Chris is a rare breed. As a member of one of London’s best-loved bands, the Squeeze co-founder has with his collaborator, Glenn Tilbrook, very much “The Odd Couple”! Together they have made a lasting contribution to popular music with hits such as ‘Cool For Cats’, ‘Up The Junction’, ‘Labelled With Love’, ‘Hourglass’ and ‘Tempted’.

Despite the fact that Chris has helped provide the soundtrack to so many fans’ lives since his first release in 1977, the passion for innovation and love of playing still drives him to carry on writing & performing, rather than sit back and admire his handiwork.

Over the course of a 13 album (40 year!) career with Squeeze, it was clear from the very beginning that Chris Difford has few peers when it comes to smart, pithy lyricism. His street-savvy, witty & wise words and music Chris has drawn plaudits from fans on both sides of the Atlantic, with his influence and style still strong today today.

Lily Allen and Mark Ronson, Kasabian, Razorlight and The Feeling have all recognised the debt they owe to Squeeze’s music and to Difford’s way with words, while journalists were moved by his winning combination with Glenn Tilbrook to dub the pair ‘The New Lennon and McCartney’.

Chris first learned to stand on his own when he wrote the lyrics for the fictional band Strange Fruit in the 1998 British comedy film ‘Still Crazy’, for which he won his first Ivor Novello award. Since then he has written and contributed lyrics for the likes of Elton John, Wet Wet Wet, Jools Holland, Paul Carrack, Lisa Stansfield and Bryan Ferry.

Don’t miss your chance to spend an evening in the company of the Grammy nominated, double Ivor Novello award winner and one of the finest singer songwriters of our generation.

Take him – he’s yours!

(Well, for one night only!)
