    St Austell Players

    Two - 'One Act Plays'

    StAPs - 2 x 1 Act Plays

These two plays are directorial debuts for Mandy Hiscock (The Dear Departed) and Rose Lancaster (The Chinese Room) giving them an opportunity to flex their creative muscles and, we hope, go on to direct more productions for the Players.

The Dear Departed by Stanley Houghton
This short play is a satire of the degradation of British moral values – especially when there is an inheritance at stake!

It is a sharp, witty and comic commentary on the state of social and familial norms. Adapted from an original novel into a play, it deals with two sisters squabbling over their father's possessions – the Dear Departed of the title – after one of them, with whom he has been living and who has been looking after him, discovers him cold and unresponsive in his bed.

The other sister immediately puts in an appearance and disagreements and hostilities arise between them. Their put-upon husbands try to keep the peace, but it is the sisters who hold sway. However, these two greedy women have a surprise in store and the story has an uplifting and amusing twist in the tale.

The Chinese Room by Andy Hutchings
This original play, which has only been performed as a full-length production once before, is a thought-provoking premise and treats on technological advances relating to artificial intelligence. It’s an exploration of the moral impact of such scientific experiments and what effect it may have on all of us.

Three women with very different personalities and backgrounds and who are strangers to each other, have volunteered to take part in a psychological experiment. They do not know what the experiment is or what is expected of them, except that they are locked together in a bunker for seven days with no contact with the outside world.

They try and work out who they are – not all of them are what they seem – and the purpose of the experiment.

Has the experiment been a success and who will make it out at the end of the week?

Touch Theatre presents 'Splendour' by Abi Morgan

    Touch Theatre - Splendour

How do you try to shape history when you are in the midst of social unrest?
Do you participate, observe, record events for posterity, or collaborate with those in power?
These are the fundamental questions for the characters in Abi Morgan’s 'Splendour', Touch Theatre’s latest production.
In the opulent drawing room of a Presidential Palace, a western photojournalist awaits the return of the dictator to take his portrait.  He is late, very late.
The dictator’s wife, her best friend, and an interpreter wait with her.  In a vodka haze, Prada shoes and light fingers tap out the time.
All 4 women harbour secrets and suspicions.
    All 4 are in danger.
This is the day that revolution comes to the palace.

Abi Morgan’s devastating play allows us to glimpse into the minds of 4 women as they grapple with life, truth and honour.

    About Touch Theatre
Touch was formed in 2015. We have an unashamed preference for female playwrights, powerful roles for female actors and the intimacy of small ensemble pieces.
Our award-winning 2017 piece, Madeleine George’s 'Precious Little', was very well-received by audiences and reviewers:
Hauntingly beautiful, and wonderfully paced and delivered
This director had the strength and skill to develop the story and characters in our opinion just as the writer would have wished
Our 2018 production of Caryl Churchill’s 'Escaped Alone' was described as:
‘A gripping piece of theatre’ with ‘some lovely comic moments’ from a ‘cast who were uniformly terrific

The Dolly Parton Story, with Hannah Richards

Dolly Parton is enjoying quite some 2019. The 8-times Grammy Award winner, singer-songwriter made a show-stealing appearance at this year's Grammys, where she was honoured as the 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year. A revival of her show 9 to 5 has just opened to rave reviews in London's glittering West End and, later this year, an eight episode series entitled Dolly Parton's Heartstrings, based on the stories and inspirations behind Parton’s most beloved songs will premiere on Netflix.

So, what better time is there to see a show based on the iconic Country music star's life and career?

That is exactly what Hannah Richards' show The Dolly Parton Story does. This is no “tribute act”, but an affectionate and accurate look at Dolly Parton through good times and bad, performed in a ground-breaking format that takes its audience on an incredible journey through the highs and lows of Dolly's working and personal lives.

Featuring passionate and heart-felt renditions of Jolene, 9 to 5, Islands In The Stream, Here You Come Again, Coat Of Many Colours, Joshua and many more, The Dolly Parton Story enjoyed sell out shows with standing ovations at Edinburgh Fringe in 2018.

Hannah sings the songs and tells the story of the “Queen of Country Music”, from her humble beginnings in the Smoky Mountains to her arrival as an international modern-day icon, idolised across generations, by men and women alike.

Follow Dolly’s story from her childhood poverty, successful marriage, struggles in the music industry and making the cross-over from country to pop - this is a true rag to riches story that will leave you wanting more.

Dolly Parton has won an astonishing 153 major awards including eight Grammys and 11 County Music Awards, including the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016,

What a beautiful performance. Dolly’s Music comes alive in a contemporary way” Dominic King, BBC Radio

Hancock & Co - James Hurn

Following James Hurn’s sell out tour of 2018, he’s back with his popular One Man-Many Voices celebration of the radio comedy classic, Hancock’s Half Hour.

A Film of the Theatre Show and the Making of a Documentary

1914. West Cornwall. Harry Elton is starting a new life below the ground mining for tin.

Across the channel, a great war rages.

When the British Army arrive with an unexpected offer, Harry and his friends swap the dirty, dark and dangerous tunnels of Geevor for the deadly underground warzone beneath the Western front.

‘You battle everyday with nature. You fight to drag minerals from the ground. You’re already fighters. You’re already warriors. Its time for you to lend those skills to the war effort’.

This epic production tells the untold story of Cornwall’s forgotten war heroes and the unique impact they had on the First World War.

Featuring a cast of professional actors and a community chorus, 'Hireth' marked the centenary of the end of World War 1 in the Grade-II listed St Just Miners’ Chapel in November 2019.

    The Lion In Winter

This brilliant, witty, amusing but poignant play, made into a film in the 60's starring Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn, is a must see for those who like a cleverly worded script and an interesting subject.
It is Christmas, 1183, and Eleanor of Aquitaine, imprisoned in London by her husband, Henry II for leading a rebellion against him, has been freed for the festive season to join Henry and their sons, Richard, Geoffrey and John, at the castle of Chinon in France.
Also invited is King Philip of France, Henry's arch enemy.  Matters are complicated as Philip's sister, Alais is also present.  She has been living at the English court since she was 7 years old, destined to marry Richard, and for which, as her dowry, Henry received the county of Vexin.

However, the marriage never took place, and as she grew up, Henry decided he wanted her for himself and took her for his mistress.
Now Philip is at Chinon demanding that the marriage to Richard takes place or he will have the Vexin back.
Not if Henry has anything to do with it!

Kneehigh Theatre favourite & co-founder Dave Mynne, last seen in Kneehigh's Fup, playing Grandad, now takes on Charles Dickens' perennial much-loved Christmas tale, A Christmas Carol.
    Joy to all mankind?

Spend an evening in the company of a mean, tight-fisted, squeezing, grasping, clutching old miser.

    Bah!

David Mynne : 'The Canterbury Tales'Welcome to ‘The Canterbury’, an Olde English Inn,
Infamous around these parts for villainy and sin.
The floor is caked in sawdust, for soaking up the spit,
And the air is thick with stories told with wisdom, guile and wit.
Some stories are romantic, some are bawdy, others scary
And there are tales about the devil that should make you oh so wary,
    Some are beautifully poetic and some a little coarser;
A medieval medley from the pen of Geoffrey Chaucer!

From the company that brought you 'A Christmas Carol', 'Dracula' and 'The Odyssey' comes a One-man performance of 'The Canterbury Tales'.
David Mynne has an enviable reputation for providing amongst the best and most entertaining One-Man shows in the UK.    David was also seen in Kneehigh Theatre’s production of “Fup” at Heligan Gardens.

David Mynne : 'The Canterbury Tales'

Revered as one of the most important works in English literature, 'The Canterbury Tales' paints an ironic and critical portrait of English society in the Middle-Ages.
All of life is here in these few bawdy, funny, serious and sometimes shocking, short stories.
Experience a journey down the foul and fetid footpaths of fourteenth-century England, told with the usual irreverence, wit and silliness!

    Expect archaic naughtiness and nonsense!
    Possibly tights and a codpiece!
    Definitely medieval swearing!
    Let's party like it's 1387!
This is Chaucer... but not as you think you know it!

A Christmas Carol was beautiful – apparently simple theatre with just one actor but you go home remembering a cast of dozens! He is a genius. – Richard Wolfenden-Brown: Director The Plough Arts Centre(on ‘A Christmas Carol’)

David Mynne’s performance is exquisite: a masterclass in the telling of tales, it needs to be seen” – Ciaran Clarke: Arts End of Nowhere.

Our play is set in something very close to contemporary Britain.
Queen Duncan, with the help of Macbeth and Banquo, has narrowly managed to stave off another revolt against her authority.  Other powerful figures in the land circle, looking for their chance to grab control.

Society, the rule of law and Government as we thought we knew it have broken down.

The witches, creatures of a disaffected underclass, wreak havoc for their own amusement, encouraging Macbeth to be first to seize his chance.  His wife adds her efforts and the stage is set for tragedy.

We watch the tragic hero, so aware of each stage of his own downfall, continue along the path he has chosen for himself.

Other leaders watch his efforts and choose their allegiances, often changing sides as events unravel.

Who will inherit what is left of the kingdom?

    Carl Grose : Superstitious Mountain

Starring Ben KernowDarren Seed & Jack Brownridge-Kelly
A rootin', tootin' black comedy about 3 Cornish brothers, from St Day, in search of a legendary goldmine in the middle of the scorching-hot Arizona desert.
    What could possibly go wrong?!

The three Gunwallow brothers from St Day are in a bit of bother:
Slim’s scrapyard business has gone pear-shaped, while Dwayne owes money to some very dodgy friends and youngest brother Mark is entangled in a doomed romance.
All three are on the edge of meltdown, and to cap it all, Daddy’s corpse is lying upstairs waiting to be buried – if they could afford the funeral.

There’s only one hope left, they must find the legendary gold mine on Superstition Mountain.

The boys' great-grandfather Tobias discovered it in 1897. Now, they just have to go there, claim the family gold and all their problems will be solved. Should be easy – right?

What will become of three proper Cornish boys in the wilds of Arizona?
Will their private Gold Rush lead to fortune or failure?
And will they live to tell the tale…?

Part epic adventure, part family saga, at the heart of Carl Grose’s black comedy are the emotional ties and trials of three brothers, rubbing along together through thick and thin – just like you and me.
‘Charismatic storytelling that stirs the imagination’ The Guardian

Cornish born playwright Carl Grose has written numerous plays including 49 Donkeys Hanged, Horse Piss For Blood, The Kneebone Cadillac and Grand Guignol, as well as writing the book for the West End hit, The Grinning Man.

He was a longstanding member of Kneehigh Theatre, for whom he wrote many of their best-known works, including Tristan and Yseult (with Anna Maria Murphy), The Wild Bride and Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs). He also co-founded the film and production company o-region with director Simon Harvey and writer / photographer Oliver Berry.

Carl writes, “It’s a thrill to have Superstition Mountain back on in Cornwall again. For ten long years the Gunwallow brothers have been sat in a drawer (or a dusty hard drive), so I’m so pleased they get to take another shot at finding that gold.
Regardless of whether they do or not (and you’ll have to watch the play to find out if they do), it’s the journey that’s important.
To process their dad’s death, to unpack some dark family secrets, to discover the truth, the Gunwallows head to Arizona. If life is, as they say, a mountain to climb, and that the trick is to enjoy the journey, then I can’t wait to enjoy seeing them try all over again.
Good luck boys. We’re rootin’ for ya!”

The production is directed by Millie Brolly and is a co-production between the Minack Theatre and Hah Hum Ah.

St Austell Players present Bouncers by John Godber, directed by Kim Rowe, and Shakers by John Godber and Jane Thornton, directed by Rose Lancaster.

Godber’s 80s classic Bouncers and the, later added, sister play Shakers (co-written with Jane Thornton) were originally penned to expose the dark underbelly of 80s night-life in Britain.
This production has been revised for a more modern audience, without forgetting its working class, social context.

Four Bouncers. Four cocktail waitresses. One Double-Bill of hard-hitting, hilarious physical comedy !

Through outrageous observations, colourful characters, and lively, emotional snapshots, Bouncers and Shakers explores the shadowy underbelly of Britain after dark, as seen through the eyes of four cocktail waitresses and the men on the club door.

Cue giggly girls, pogo-punks, Mr & Mrs Trendy and "lads on the razz" tittering at the thought of a ‘Long Slow Comfortable Screw’ as Bouncers and Shakers offers a fascinating view of the reality behind the pulsating beats of the dance floor and the not-so-glitzy-glamour lurking beyond the plastic palms and Pina Coladas.

Please note performances contain explicit language and adult themes.

The St Austell Players present Arcadia by Tom Stoppard :

A play about Time – and how to survive it.

Widely regarded as the greatest playwright of our age, Stoppard’s witty comedy dances between the centuries in a single room in a wealthy Derbyshire country house, where characters from the Regency period and present day attempt to develop and discover a world of sense and order in the chaos of history and the present world.

In 1809, the brilliant and gifted thirteen year old Thomasina Coverly is exploring mathematics, thermodynamics and the meaning of ‘carnal embrace', guided by her tutor Septimus Hodge. Her mother, Lady Croom, spends most of her time in the beautifully landscaped English garden, occasionally noting with alarm that her daughter is growing up fast.

In 2022, Bernard Nightingale is on the trail of a scandal surrounding Lord Byron. Did Byron shoot a rabbit, a hare, or a poet? Just who is having an affair with whom and what on earth is Noakes doing to Lady Croom’s garden?

Bash Street Theatre presents “The Battling Butlers!”

Live music, physical comedy & circus skills combine to tell a story as old as time...

Juggling babies, toddlers on stilts and teaching your kid Joey to ride his first unicycle...

These are all part of everyday life for showman Joe Butler, in this poignant, family love story involving the ever-changing relationship of a father-and-son double act, The Battling Butlers.

What sort of parent actually encourages their five-year-old to play with fire, anyway?!

Using a unique blend of physical theatre, circus skills, original songs and live music, The Battling Butlers is a study in role-reversal and the inevitability of change, as the old order makes way for the new.

    "COME OUT FIGHTING"

    Tickets in advance : Standard : £10.00 ( £12.50 On The Day )

Love is a Battlefield: a story of male passion, violence and sexual identity; a gay re-imagining of the story of Carmen.

Corporal Joe Donaldson’s suppressed sexuality finds vent only in violence, honed by his military training.  But then he meets Carl and is propelled headlong into unknown waters – the world of a celebrity boxer and infatuation with a young man whom life has taught not to trust love or commitment.

As his world crashes down around him, Joe’s confusion, and his violent instincts threaten to destroy them both.

Essentially a love story inspired by Merimée and Bizet's immortal Carmen, Come Out Fighting explores male sexuality and its testosterone-driven links with aggression and violence.

Two squaddies, both damaged by childhood abuse, are pitched into a desperate, sado-masochistic affair, fuelled by jealousy, anger and betrayal where fighting and sex become indistinguishable.

Can they overcome their compromised understanding of physical and emotional relationships to find what they both crave, even if they have yet to recognise what that is?

Set against this troubled romance is the wry subplot of a gay celebrity boxer whose manager struggles to keep the nature - and insatiability - of his fighter’s sexual appetite under wraps.

Come Out Fighting has passion, action, even some comedy - and something to say to everyone.   The script manages successfully to combine a sense of gritty realism of the life of a Squaddie, of Joe's coming out and of Carl's hidden vulnerability, all with a certain amount of humour.

Come Out Fighting is a new play by Nick Bamford and performed by What Now Product!ons.  New to Cornwall, the company brings decades of experience to produce engaging, original, new writing for both stage and screen.....

We examine what it is to be human..

We reflect, we explore, we question, we look at old stories and tell them in new ways, or find out what happened next...

Come Out Fighting is funded by FEAST, national Lottery and Arts Council England.

    (8 NEW TALES FOR 2023!)

    Nasty but nicely comic entertainment…

"In 'Owdyado’s twisted world nothing is ever what it seems.”

    Lyn Gardner

Influenced by cult classics such as Inside No.9, The Twilight Zone and Roald Dahl’s Tales of the Unexpected, Twisted Christmas promises a darkly comic evening of macabre mini plays all with a festive flavour!
