St Austell Players: 'Arcadia', Tom Stoppard

7:30 PMSt Austell Arts Centre, Truro Road, St Austell, PL25 5HJ

The St Austell Players present Arcadia by Tom Stoppard :

A play about Time – and how to survive it.

Widely regarded as the greatest playwright of our age, Stoppard’s witty comedy dances between the centuries in a single room in a wealthy Derbyshire country house, where characters from the Regency period and present day attempt to develop and discover a world of sense and order in the chaos of history and the present world.

In 1809, the brilliant and gifted thirteen year old Thomasina Coverly is exploring mathematics, thermodynamics and the meaning of ‘carnal embrace', guided by her tutor Septimus Hodge. Her mother, Lady Croom, spends most of her time in the beautifully landscaped English garden, occasionally noting with alarm that her daughter is growing up fast.

In 2022, Bernard Nightingale is on the trail of a scandal surrounding Lord Byron. Did Byron shoot a rabbit, a hare, or a poet? Just who is having an affair with whom and what on earth is Noakes doing to Lady Croom’s garden?
