‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ by Tennessee Williams

St Austell Players : "Streetcar Named Desire"

St Austell Players present Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire”

Blanche Dubois arrives in New Orleans from the rural Mississippi plantation where she and her sister Stella grew up.

It is 1947 and the world has changed.

Stella has married a ‘common’ working man who looked so glamorous in uniform with his medals on show.  Blanche is looking for happiness but can she find it amongst Stanley’s bawdy, poker playing friends?

The weather and the music are hot, the neighbourhood is mixed, rowdy and crowded and Blanche must try to navigate this strange new world.

Stella tries to keep the peace in her tiny apartment as tensions build.

May 1988.
Robin Hesketh, a junior minister in Margaret Thatcher’s Government, comes home to his idyllic Cotswold residence two days after passing the notorious Section 28 that prohibited the “promotion of homosexuality” by Local Authorities.

But life is not as blissful as it seems.
The foxes have dug up his garden, his wife has a hangover and the fridge is empty.

A morning of comical marital sparring evolves into something darker and deeper as an incident from the past tests their relationship to its limits.

In an Election Year there could not be a better time for its revival.

Advisory Age 14+. Explores themes of sexuality and suicide.
