    Two - 'One Act Plays'

    StAPs - 2 x 1 Act Plays

These two plays are directorial debuts for Mandy Hiscock (The Dear Departed) and Rose Lancaster (The Chinese Room) giving them an opportunity to flex their creative muscles and, we hope, go on to direct more productions for the Players.

The Dear Departed by Stanley Houghton
This short play is a satire of the degradation of British moral values – especially when there is an inheritance at stake!

It is a sharp, witty and comic commentary on the state of social and familial norms. Adapted from an original novel into a play, it deals with two sisters squabbling over their father's possessions – the Dear Departed of the title – after one of them, with whom he has been living and who has been looking after him, discovers him cold and unresponsive in his bed.

The other sister immediately puts in an appearance and disagreements and hostilities arise between them. Their put-upon husbands try to keep the peace, but it is the sisters who hold sway. However, these two greedy women have a surprise in store and the story has an uplifting and amusing twist in the tale.

The Chinese Room by Andy Hutchings
This original play, which has only been performed as a full-length production once before, is a thought-provoking premise and treats on technological advances relating to artificial intelligence. It’s an exploration of the moral impact of such scientific experiments and what effect it may have on all of us.

Three women with very different personalities and backgrounds and who are strangers to each other, have volunteered to take part in a psychological experiment. They do not know what the experiment is or what is expected of them, except that they are locked together in a bunker for seven days with no contact with the outside world.

They try and work out who they are – not all of them are what they seem – and the purpose of the experiment.

Has the experiment been a success and who will make it out at the end of the week?

Touch Theatre presents 'Splendour' by Abi Morgan

    Touch Theatre - Splendour

How do you try to shape history when you are in the midst of social unrest?
Do you participate, observe, record events for posterity, or collaborate with those in power?
These are the fundamental questions for the characters in Abi Morgan’s 'Splendour', Touch Theatre’s latest production.
In the opulent drawing room of a Presidential Palace, a western photojournalist awaits the return of the dictator to take his portrait.  He is late, very late.
The dictator’s wife, her best friend, and an interpreter wait with her.  In a vodka haze, Prada shoes and light fingers tap out the time.
All 4 women harbour secrets and suspicions.
    All 4 are in danger.
This is the day that revolution comes to the palace.

Abi Morgan’s devastating play allows us to glimpse into the minds of 4 women as they grapple with life, truth and honour.

    About Touch Theatre
Touch was formed in 2015. We have an unashamed preference for female playwrights, powerful roles for female actors and the intimacy of small ensemble pieces.
Our award-winning 2017 piece, Madeleine George’s 'Precious Little', was very well-received by audiences and reviewers:
Hauntingly beautiful, and wonderfully paced and delivered
This director had the strength and skill to develop the story and characters in our opinion just as the writer would have wished
Our 2018 production of Caryl Churchill’s 'Escaped Alone' was described as:
‘A gripping piece of theatre’ with ‘some lovely comic moments’ from a ‘cast who were uniformly terrific

A great evening of music and fun!
    Soff singing
Soff says: “This is an evening of the music hall of old, meeting the new millennium! Instead of a starchy singer, in tight fitting corsets and oversized hat, of Music Hall days, you get me, a sultry singer in a more comfortable outfit and with an oversized bottom!
Mind you she and I are just as cheeky!”

The idea of The SoFF Music Sing series is a fun evening out for all ages to enjoy while being encouraged to sing along with song sheets and special guests of the show, plucked fresh from the very audience.

There will be chances to win prizes and a special prize for ladies to nominate a husband, son, father or even boyfriend for a segment of the show.

The entire evening will have a quiz running through it with clues within the songs for even more prize give always.

You should have face ache from smiling, laughing and singing by the time it’s all over!!!

    About Lauren Dalrymple
“A vibrant performer of lustrous textures and energy – imparts her own soul-jazz flavour and rich vibrato always pushing at the constraints of the pop-jazz techniques while holding the vibe!” John Fordham – The Guardian

“…She has the ability to hold an audience in the palm of her hand and keep them there”. Mike Flynn – JAZZWISE Magazine

British born of Guyanese parents, vocalist Lauren Dalrymple has been singing since the age of 8. Initially singing in choirs in venues such as The Royal Festival and Albert Halls, she continued on to Backing Vocals session work, before going solo at the age of 19.

Her brand ‘SoFF Music, Sistah of the Fuller Figure Music’, has encouraged the bringing together of audience and musicians and has successfully done so, mainly through SoFF Music jam session and SoFF Music Live Lounge which have run in London for 23 years.

“It’s not enough to sing at your audience. You need, when possible, to get them involved and 100% enjoy the experience they share right alongside you”.

    "Hireth"
(Cornish word meaning 'longing for home' )

A Film of the Theatre Show and the Making of a Documentary

1914. West Cornwall. Harry Elton is starting a new life below the ground mining for tin.

Across the channel, a great war rages.

When the British Army arrive with an unexpected offer, Harry and his friends swap the dirty, dark and dangerous tunnels of Geevor for the deadly underground warzone beneath the Western front.

‘You battle everyday with nature. You fight to drag minerals from the ground. You’re already fighters. You’re already warriors. Its time for you to lend those skills to the war effort’.

This epic production tells the untold story of Cornwall’s forgotten war heroes and the unique impact they had on the First World War.

Featuring a cast of professional actors and a community chorus, 'Hireth' marked the centenary of the end of World War 1 in the Grade-II listed St Just Miners’ Chapel in November 2019.

Cornwall World Heritage Site is delighted to support the showing of the Hireth film in communities in Cornwall and West Devon.

    The Lion In Winter

This brilliant, witty, amusing but poignant play, made into a film in the 60's starring Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn, is a must see for those who like a cleverly worded script and an interesting subject.
It is Christmas, 1183, and Eleanor of Aquitaine, imprisoned in London by her husband, Henry II for leading a rebellion against him, has been freed for the festive season to join Henry and their sons, Richard, Geoffrey and John, at the castle of Chinon in France.
Also invited is King Philip of France, Henry's arch enemy.  Matters are complicated as Philip's sister, Alais is also present.  She has been living at the English court since she was 7 years old, destined to marry Richard, and for which, as her dowry, Henry received the county of Vexin.

However, the marriage never took place, and as she grew up, Henry decided he wanted her for himself and took her for his mistress.
Now Philip is at Chinon demanding that the marriage to Richard takes place or he will have the Vexin back.
Not if Henry has anything to do with it!

    Friday, 6th 1.00pm & 7.00pm

    Saturday, 7th - 7.00pm

Starring Ed Rowe, Jenny Beare and Mary Woodvine

    A Cornish Carol poster

Christmas is upon us and business is booming in Ebenezer Scrooge’s Pre-Packaged “Proper” Pasty Production Company.
Costs are low, profit is high and the money is pouring in.

What’s that? The staff are exhausted? They want a day off? They can barely afford to eat?
‘Bah, humbug! You don’t get nothing for free in this life.’

Over the course of one miserable, mizzly, Cornish night, join miserly Scrooge and a gaggle of ghostly ghouls who force him to revisit his PAST(y), explore his (Ker)NOW and decide if his FUTURE will Come-to-Good.

From the team that brought you Trevithick, The Cornish Caretakers and HIRETH, comes this irreverent, new adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic.

Weaving physical comedy, music and gags a-plenty, A Cornish Carol is a festive treat for the whole family.

Starring : Edward Rowe, Jenny Beare & Mary Woodvine

St Austell Players present Bouncers by John Godber, directed by Kim Rowe, and Shakers by John Godber and Jane Thornton, directed by Rose Lancaster.

Godber’s 80s classic Bouncers and the, later added, sister play Shakers (co-written with Jane Thornton) were originally penned to expose the dark underbelly of 80s night-life in Britain.
This production has been revised for a more modern audience, without forgetting its working class, social context.

Four Bouncers. Four cocktail waitresses. One Double-Bill of hard-hitting, hilarious physical comedy !

Through outrageous observations, colourful characters, and lively, emotional snapshots, Bouncers and Shakers explores the shadowy underbelly of Britain after dark, as seen through the eyes of four cocktail waitresses and the men on the club door.

Cue giggly girls, pogo-punks, Mr & Mrs Trendy and "lads on the razz" tittering at the thought of a ‘Long Slow Comfortable Screw’ as Bouncers and Shakers offers a fascinating view of the reality behind the pulsating beats of the dance floor and the not-so-glitzy-glamour lurking beyond the plastic palms and Pina Coladas.

Please note performances contain explicit language and adult themes.

Film : St Just OrdinaliaFilm : 'St. Just Ordinalia'
    (Cert. PG)

In September, 2021, at the historic site of Plen an Gwari, St Just, there was a series of open-air repertory performances of all three Ordinalia plays (Origo Mundi, The Passion and The Resurrection).

The epic production gave audiences an opportunity, if desired, to join in with Cornish Language, dancing and sea-song sessions, watch Cornish wrestling, listen to the history of St Just's Plen an Gwari and to wander along the town trails and heritage walks.

The cast perfectly created and delivered the aim of the original plays to impress the Christian bible stories on the local population.  With creative, moving, dramatic, witty and farcical scenes adapted from the original by local playwright Pauline Sheppard, the actors, supported by a 34-strong choir, performed at the top of their game.

Over 150 costumes were designed and made for the cast. A team of 27 set builders helped to create and build the set and, in all, over 230 volunteers helped to make the dream a reality.

Watch the trailer for this epic production, below.

The film version being shown of this unique occasion includes scenes from each of the three plays, complete with an introduction, interviews and other special features.

This is your opportunity to re-live this remarkable event, or to experience for the first time, this extraordinary celebration of Cornish heritage and culture.

'The spirit of St Just's Ordinalia should be bottled up and made available on the NHS!' ; Ted Lean, Project Director

'This was a successful, major community event that could not fail to arouse intense admiration and not a little envy from any outsider' ; Professor Sally Mackey, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama

THE LORD OF THE FLIES, by William Golding.

“We’ve got to have rules and obey them.

    After all, we’re not savages.

We’re English; and the English are best at everything.”

Golding’s 1954 novel is a classic study of how not to govern, of how not to follow rules and how to watch your world crumbling in front of you … exciting and daunting …

Bash Street Theatre presents “The Battling Butlers!”

Live music, physical comedy & circus skills combine to tell a story as old as time...

Juggling babies, toddlers on stilts and teaching your kid Joey to ride his first unicycle...

These are all part of everyday life for showman Joe Butler, in this poignant, family love story involving the ever-changing relationship of a father-and-son double act, The Battling Butlers.

What sort of parent actually encourages their five-year-old to play with fire, anyway?!

Using a unique blend of physical theatre, circus skills, original songs and live music, The Battling Butlers is a study in role-reversal and the inevitability of change, as the old order makes way for the new.

    The Countrymen

The Countrymen are a Cornish Folk Rock Harmony Group from Launceston.“If you get the chance to see these guys (The Countrymen) in concert then take it, you will not
    be disappointed”   Harry Glasson

Five seasoned musicians with tight four-part harmony vocals and a token Cornishman. With a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs, as well as original material. Interspersed with the occasional pop cover to lighten the mood when required, there is no mistaking that to a man, they love their county with a passion.

    Listen to them here!

Now in their sixth year, they have been becoming increasingly popular across both Devon & Cornwall with appearances on both radio and TV and numerous festival appearances including The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival, The Rock Oyster Festival, Falmouth Week, Bridport Folk Festival and Little Orchard Festival.

2023 will see the band take on a fourth concert tour of both Cornwall and Devon entitled “Bal Maiden” which is the track title to one of the new tracks for a third forthcoming album..

The band was formed from an Open Mic Night at their local, The Countryman Inn near Launceston, which is where the band’s name originates.  They soon found a mutual love of singing in harmony and almost accidentally developed a strong reputation for an emphasis on Cornishness in the repertoire.

In addition to offering quality live entertainment on stage, they have also been busy in the recording studio and have released three online EPs to date, Cornish Lads Vol.1, 2 and not unsurprisingly, Cornish Lads Vol.3.

They have also released two albums, “Trees On The Hill” and more recently, “The River Rolls On”.

The Countrymen - in 3 minutes!

“Fantastic band! Great harmonies and mix of music. Don't miss them!” Guy McKensie

“Saw these guys on Saturday in the main street (Falmouth Shanty Festival). Great singing. Great banter”. Steve Prophet

“Absolutely love this band. Saw them for the first time at the St Agnes Lifeboat celebration in June and was blown away by the musicianship and beautiful harmonies. At times they were very exclusive and original and at other times derivative but still brilliant. They reminded me at times of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and I would love to see them attempt "Teach Your Children"; but their take on some traditional Cornish songs was uplifting and poignant at the same time. A wonderful night's entertainment. I very much look forward to seeing them again (and again). Thanks guys, much appreciated” David Simons

Watch The Tempest's comedy trio here!

St Austell Players present The Tempest, Shakespeare’s classic tale of power and magic, forgiveness and revenge, complete with illusion, treachery, and Gucci handbags.

Prospero, usurped duchess of Milan, lives exiled with her daughter Miranda on an unknown island, consumed by thoughts of retribution.
When a familiar ship appears on the horizon she seizes her opportunity and enlists the help of her servant, the island spirit Ariel, to enact revenge on those responsible for her downfall and force her treacherous sister Antonio into repentance.

And thus, into The Tempest. For this is no ordinary storm, and this is no ordinary island.

    “Bob Harris is a straight-up legend”Chris Martin / Coldplay
“Colin (Hall) is perhaps the world’s greatest Beatles authority” – Bob Harris

BBC’s Bob Harris and author/music journalist Colin Hall set out upon an intimate speaking tour based around their mutual love and appreciation of The Beatles, including a previously unheard interview with Lennon/McCartney from Bob’s archive.  Together, Bob & Colin tell of how Lennon, McCartney and, to a lesser extent, Harrison gifted their tunes to others.

By 1963 Lennon and McCartney had written so many songs they simply couldn’t all be accommodated on just their own Beatles releases.  It made artistic and economic good sense to offer these songs to other artists for recording and the Merseybeat boom of 1963 & 1964 gave them a tailor made outlet.  This is the story behind those songs, the hits, the misses and the demos that the group never released: The Songs The Beatles Gave Away’.

Among the many recipients of these songs were Cilla Black, Billy J. Kramer (who both offer candid insights) Tommy Quickly, and… let’s not forget, The Rolling Stones who were bequeathed ‘I Wanna be Your Man,’ a tune from a teenage McCartney, that was finished in 20 minutes in the studio as The Stones were recording!

‘Whispering’ Bob Harris, OBE has been at the very heart of UK music scene for the best part of fifty years.  He has established a worldwide reputation as one of the most trusted and influential broadcasters of his generation – described by Radio Times as “…one of the greats of British contemporary music broadcasting” and by The Mail On Sunday as “a national treasure”.

Few people have taken as many bands into mainstream consciousness as Bob Harris – from his groundbreaking work in 1970s on BBC Radio 1 and the legendary Old Grey Whistle Test TV shows to his current programme Bob Harris Country on BBC Radio 2.

For the past 20 years, Colin Hall has been the custodian at John Lennon’s childhood home ‘Mendips’ (guiding the likes of Bob Dylan, Yoko Ono and James Taylor around the property), has written two books on The Fab Four and presented a BBC Radio 4 documentary with Alexei Sayle titled ‘The Lennon Visitors’.  Coincidentally, Colin was incredibly in attendance at the Village Fete where John was first introduced to Paul!

The two friends have worked on several projects together before including the upcoming film Pre:Fab (which focuses on the band’s early days as The Quarrymen), a WBBC production of ‘The Songs The Beatles Gave Away’ and 2007’s Sony Award-winning ‘The Day John Met Paul.’

This is the perfect show for fans of The Beatles, The 1960s, Pop Trivia and for anyone who ever listened to, and enjoyed, the timeless music of Lennon & McCartney.
