      Film : 'Loving Vincent'

Cast: Douglas Booth, Saoirse Ronan, Jerome Flynn, Aidan Turner, Helen McCrory, Eleanor Tomlinson, John Sessions, Chris O’Dowd, Robert Gulaczyk.

Directors : Hugh Welchman, Dorota Kobiela.
'Loving Vincent' is a stunning, fully painted animated feature, starring Douglas Booth and Oscar-nominated Saoirse Ronan

The film, the world’s first oil-painted animation explores the life and mysterious, controversial death of Vincent Van Gogh, told by his paintings and by the characters that inhabit them. The intrigue unfolds through interviews with the characters closest to Vincent and through dramatic reconstructions of the events leading up to his death.

Hand painted in oils by around 100 artists, this distinctive animation draws inspiration from the feverish paintings of Vincent Van Gogh to explore the nature of his death. The story is set one year after the troubled painter passes away, from a gunshot wound to his stomach.

Armand Roulin (Douglas Booth), an occasional model for the artist and the son of postman Joseph (Chris O’Dowd) has been charged by his father to take an undelivered letter from Van Gogh to his brother Theo. Initially unenthusiastic, Roulin plunges into a personal odyssey through which he tries to unpick the details surrounding the death of the “father of modern art”.

“The fact that every frame of Loving Vincent was oil-painted, in a process that took six years, would be remarkable enough in itself. But painted to look exactly like the work of Vincent Van Gogh? That’s something else.... Corn fields shimmer and rustle with slight flickers of the impasto. The night sky sparkles and swirls. And faces – even the recognisable ones of a noted British cast – pose for a set of portraits that are rarely short of captivating. “  Tim Robey, The Telegraph

Phil Beer in concertPhil Beer in concert

Phil Beer is one of the most popular ambassadors for acoustic roots music and half of the phenomenally successful Show of Hands.

A solo concert by Phil is a treat for the ears.  His sublime playing and natural vocals create a range of emotions and images which will remain as happy memories for his audiences a long time after he has taken his final bow.

A dazzling instrumentalist, he is perhaps best known as a top flight fiddler and plays in the all-star line-up, Feast of Fiddles. But his skills don’t stop there, he also plays slide, Spanish and tenor guitar, mandocello, viola, mandolin and South American cuatro, not to mention contributing rich vocals.

Born in Exminster, Devon, he started to play fiddle, guitar and mandolin while still at school in Teignmouth and habitually credits Davey Graham’s Folk, Blues & Beyond as his inspiration for acoustic music.

He played his first gig at 14 and started working as a duo with Paul Downes in 1974 (their re-union Live at Nettlebed CD was released four years ago on the Talking Elephant label).

He was then in the Arizona Smoke Revue and a key member of Johnny Coppin’s band. Phil's impressive track record also includes touring with Mike Oldfield and being a member of the feted Albion Band from 1984-1991.

Show of Hands became a full-time partnership in the early '90s, a band that has gone on to sell out the Royal Albert Hall many times and has been voted Best Live Act, by the public, at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Phil, who also has his own Phil Beer Band, famously guested on the Rolling Stones Steel Wheels album and Steve Harley’s Poetic Justice.

As a composer, Phil has written many numbers including the stunning instrumental The Falmouth Packet for Show of Hands’ album Witness.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to enjoy an evening in the company of one of Folk music's legends.

      Settled …. Until suddenly you’re not…
Candid, poignant and intimate, award-winning playwright Ali Taylor's critically acclaimed play is a powerful and timely reflection on the social and personal impact of spiraling housing costs, gentrification and the challenges of the forced relocation. Cathy tells the story of one woman’s fight for her home, her life and her rights.
Exploring resonances in today’s society with the story told in the ground-breaking Ken Loach film, Cathy Come Home, 50 years ago, Cathy is directed by Cardboard Citizens' Artistic Director, Adrian Jackson.

The performance will include an interactive style debate in classic Forum Theatre style.
Forum Theatre is a style of theatre that empowers the audience to change the outcome and have their say on one of society’s most topical subjects today meaning every performance will be a completely unique experience.
Audience members will be encouraged to suggest different actions and outcomes for the narrative, helping to actively engage with the issues that the plays presents and change the course of the character’s lives.
And, don't worry! Audience members can be as involved as they decide, whether choosing to get up on stage and act themselves or just sit back and watch as the story is rewritten in front of their eyes.
This revival of Cathy features its original acclaimed cast: Alex Jones, Amy Loughton, Cathy Owen and Hayley Wareham.

All proceeds from the performance will go to St Petroc’s Society.

      Maggie Bell & Dave Kelly

Maggie Bell & Dave Kellyonly appearance in Cornwall!

An evening with two champions of the British R&B scene: two great voices, two great reputations and one wonderful evening of acoustic blues, soul and good times...... and, no doubt, lots of fun!

Maggie Bell and Dave Kelly renewed their partnership in 2016 after a two year lay-off with some selected venues and festivals in the UK and Canada, and will tour the UK again in 2018, playing just a few select venues.

The pair's on-stage chemistry is immediately apparent, stemming from their love and respect for the music they play as well as the deep knowledge of the genre.  Their stage craft is as would be expected from two professionals with a collective experience of 100 years, but this is no slick show wheeled out with any predictability.  Indeed when Maggie and Dave take to the stage 'anything can happen' (and often does!).

Although both coming originally out of blues/soul explosion of the late 1960s their repertoire is far broader than just that. When they first got together in 2007, they both wished to sing 'any song that took their fancy', so the set includes folk, rock, country, gospel as well as blues and soul.

      Maggie Bell
Scotland's Queen of Soul, founder member of Stone the Crows, later had an incredibly successful solo career on both sides of the Atlantic, now back on the music scene after a 20 year lay off.  Maggie was a resounding hit at the Led Zeppelin reunion concert in 2008.

      Dave Kelly
London's slide guitar king, having learned his trade in the backing bands of, and recording with, Howlin Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Son House & Junior Wells to name but five blues legends of his acquaintance.  Dave is a founder member of The Blues Band, still wowing audiences after nearly 30 years on the road.

      One promoter commented:
"I don't know how they make such a sound with one guitar and two voices - they sound like a full band."

      Mitch Benn

“Song after song of exquisitely crafted satire” The Scotsman

      Congratulations!  It's 2018 and you're still here!

So is Mitch, ( "the country's leading musical satirist" The Times) looking backwards, forwards and sideways trying to make the world a better place, one silly song at a time.

Join him as he looks back over what for the lack of a better word he still refers to as his "career" and ponders where he - and indeed all of us - might be going next.

"A seriously talented laugh-maker, musician and satirist. Mitch Benn should be more widely known and appreciated. He’s Britain’s answer to Tom Lehrer”; The Swindonian

A stalwart of BBC Radio 4's 'Now Show' for more than a decade, Mitch has also presented many radio specials. Following on from the success of 'Mitch Benn Is The 37th Beatle', a further three specials on music icons Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Elvis have been broadcast - 'The Freewheelin' Mitch Benn', 'Mitch Benn Is The Fat Pink Duke' and 'Mitch Benn Has Left The Building'.
He also co-presented with Harry Shearer, BBC Radio 2's 'Anatomy Of A Guitar' and presented ‘Spank The Plank' for BBC Radio 4.  More recently, he appeared on (and won) BBC1 television's 'Celebrity Mastermind'!

“Well crafted, well sung, his songs are just plain funny” The Guardian

Mitch is the author of two novels, 'Terra' and 'Terra's World' both published by Gollancz and co-author with Jon Holmes of 'The Twitter History Of The World' the paperback edition of which was published by Prion Books.

Wit, wisdom and wordplay of the highest order!

“Song after song of exquisitely crafted satire” The Scotsman

“Mitch Benn remains an optimist, despite the way the world is, and it is his mission to improve the world with words which deflate pomposity and pretence,”
      ★★★★ Scotsgay

Roll up! Roll up! Step right this way

The date is 11th September 1967 and The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour pulls into the Cornish seaside town of Newquay.

Long-term fan of the band and new Balti House owner Sandeep Chaudary finds himself intricately caught up with their visit.  Events not only lead to him meeting John, Paul, George and Ringo, but also his friends, family and they take their very own surreal tour across the world on the incredible Balti-Celtic carpet ride.

In this wildly imaginative new play, Alan M. Kent -prize-winning playwright of The Tin Violin, Surfing Tommies and National Minority, takes audiences on an extraordinary journey through time and space.

Here post-colonialism meets pop -all helped along with a mischievous dusting of (L)ucy in the (S)ky with (D)iamondsand a generous helping of hot and spicy Balti-style Vindaloo…

Praise for the plays of Alan M. Kent:
“Last year’s Surfing Tommies was a cracker…” The Sunday Times
“I have only praise for Alan M. Kent’s writing. He has an amazing ability to use Cornish history deep-rooted within the character and their lives and then combine it with the sort of comedy that has you roaring with laughter.” Cornwall Today
“Pick of the week? Surfing Tommies – Alan M. Kent’s award-winning drama.” The Guardian
“The most important Cornish writer of the twenty-first century.” Le Monde
“History and drama combined in perfect harmony.” Historia
National Minority is a striking play… the same breath of vision – and a particular human longing – as Irish Drama of the last century. The dialogue is always well written and is totally natural. ” Edward Bond

      Noel Coward's 'Relative Values'

There is trouble at Marshwood House.
Felicity, the countess, is dismayed that her errant son plans to marry an American movie star, Miranda Frayle, rather than “someone of his own class”.
But the countess's displeasure is nothing compared with that of her maid, Moxie, who threatens to quit Marshwood before Miranda arrives.
The action hinges on the countess's plan to keep Moxie while scuppering the marriage.
Coward’s satire of snobbery and the class system is stark reminder of former times and attitudes.

      Dreadnought SW 'The Cause'

Written by Natalie McGrath & Directed by Josie Sutcliffe.

1913. Revolution stings the air. In an orchard two women meet in secret.

Their actions have divided them. Divided a nation. Split their cause in two.

What happens when the two women are suffrage leaders and rebels; Emmeline Pankhurst and Millicent Fawcett?

The Cause considers the impact that a lifetime of political campaigning has on an individual.

Asking how far would you go for what you believe in? Marking the centenary year of the first votes for some women in 1918, this dynamic production has an original musical score by Sarah Moody (Devil’s Violin) and film animation by artist Catherine Cartwright, projected for thrilling visual effect.

Brought to you by Dreadnought South West who toured Oxygen celebrating the great 1913 women’s pilgrimage in 2013.

Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool

Starring : Annette Benning, Jamie Bell, Julie Walters, Kenneth Cranham & Vanessa Redgrave.

Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool is a comedy-drama, based on the true story of the romance between the ageing Hollywood movie star Gloria Grahame (Annette Bening) and fledgling actor Peter Turner (Jamie Bell), 29 years her junior .

Bening gives a towering performance as Gloria Grahame and Bell is teamed once more with Julie Walters, who plays his mother, 27 years after they were previously on screen together in Billy Elliot.

There is a great on-screen spark between Bening & Bell; as they fall in love with each other, the audience begins to fall in love with both of them, willing their relationship to succeed.

The writing is sympethetic, honest, funny and touching.  Screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh (author of Control, Nowhere Boy and The Look of Love) finds the perfect pitch for the film.  He skilfully adapts Turner's autobiography and was awarded with a BAFTA nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.

The film is set during the later years in the life of  the American actress Gloria Grahame (who died in 1981).  It recounts her unlikely last-gasp love affair with Peter Turner, a struggling English actor. When they met, in a London boardinghouse in 1978, he was 26 and she was almost three decades older, striving to supplement a waning film career with stage roles.

Once a major star, (having won an Oscar in 1952 for “The Bad and the Beautiful”), Grahame excelled at playing knowingly sultry floozies. She played Ado Annie in the movie version of Oklahoma and Violet Bick, Bedford Falls femme fatale, in the classic movie It's A Wonderful Life.

As an unknown, young actor in the late 1970s, Turner met and fell in love with Grahame who, incredibly, was living in the same North London boarding house.  She was looking to maintain her fading career through working on the English stage.

Their relationship faltered but Turner receives a 'phone call: Grahame had collapsed in her dressing room while on tour in the UK, and had asked to come and stay with Peter and his family (Turner's parents brilliantly played by Julie Walters and Kenneth Cranham) in Liverpool, convinced that she could recover there. And so, the two are brought together one final time.

Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool is a bewitching story of Spring and Autumn, star-crossed lovers, told with tremendous warmth and tenderness.
A film not to be missed.

      Touch Theatre 'Escaped Alone'

      A natter and annihilation

How do you take your tea? Black with a twist of banality? One anxiety or two?

‘Escaped Alone’  showcases four disarming women who maintain the simple pleasures of tea and small talk interspersed with apocalyptic and increasingly absurdist visions of environmental collapse.

Caryl Churchill’s play deals with the ordinary and the extraordinary,  at one level exploring the fragmented nature of memory and the experience of trauma and at another looking at how the media is reporting and trivialising the effect mankind is having on the planet.

Touch Theatre is committed to bringing strong political drama to local venues, and is delighted to be touring with an all female cast in this powerful work from one of Britain’s leading playwrights.

This play conjures up achingly funny visions of a dystopian world.

Has it already happened?    Did we miss it or is it Apocalypse Dreckly?

      Mike Flynn - JAZZWISE Magazine

      Film : Phantom Thread (Cert.15)

Starring : Daniel Day-Lewis, Lesley Manville, Vicky Krieps, Gina McKee.

Phantom Thread (15) has much to commend it.
Mark Kermode includes it in his Top Ten films of 2018.
Not only is it an Oscar-winning film, it also had another 47 award wins & 97 nominations.  It receives an impressive 91% on the Rotten Tomatoes website and it was chosen by its star, Daniel Day-Lewis, to be the film to feature his last-ever screen performance.

Set in the glamourous world of 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a man whose charisma and genius are matched by his obsessive, controlling personality.

Together with his sister, a meticulous and Oscar nominated performance from Lesley Manville, they are at the centre of British fashion; dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutantes and Dames, all with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock.

Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life, as his muse and lover.   A once controlled man with plans, he suddenly finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.

Phantom Thread is a stylish, elegant movie.  Its Director, Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, There Will be Blood, Punch Drunk Love) has created a visually stunning film with a sublimely eerie and immaculately constructed web into which its audience will be drawn.  The central performances are masterclasses in acting and the film's impact will stay with the viewer long after the closing credits have rolled.

      London Philharmonic Skiffle Orchestra

If Laughter is the Best Medicine, the LPSO is just the tonic – they'll leave you in stitches!

The London Philharmonic Skiffle Orchestra is a breath of fresh air. In a world where everyone is frightened to make a joke, for fear of offending someone, The LPSO is in no risk of offending anyone, except those with no sense of the ridiculous!
Maintaining the musical comedy tradition of Viv Stanshall, the Bonzo Dog Doodah BandSpike Jones and his City Slickers and, in more recent times, The Old / New Rope String Band and the Ukulele Orchestra of Great BritainThe LPSO meticulously blend virtuoso musical performances with anarchic, absurdist comedy. Their performances are colourful, bizarre, tuneful and hilarious, incorporating a wealth of instruments, costume changes, and numerous outlandish props.
Most impressive is the group's seemingly endlesss energy and enjoyable enthusiasm to entertain and enchant. Their boundless exuberance and their skill and versatility of their musicianship drives the show forward and forward, and faster and faster, to a dafter and dafter comical climax, which will leave us all breathless with admiration.
The LPSO come to the Arts Centre, for one night only, fresh from playing London's Union Chapel, as part of a star-studded bill including Ralph McTellChas and Dave, The Jive Aces, Chris Difford & Billy Bragg, in the show A Night For Lonnie Donnegan, honouring the UK's Skiffle King.

As seen on Vernon Kay's "Five O'Clock Show"!
“I love your band – great fun!”  Rick Wakeman
“Great Night's Entertainment”  Jersey Arts Centre
The LPSO raised the roof....with laughter, insanity & a fantastic range of every type of music - & musical instrument - possible. The audience left with wide smiles & happy hearts saying:  "We haven’t laughed so much in years!”  Director, King's Theatre, Cheddar

Flat Packed Theatre 'Hyde & Seek'

Based on the tale of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Hyde & Seek is a macabre ghost story with occasional spatterings of vaudevillian humour.

The story expands on the world of the original narrative; and the friendly, yet haunted former stage-door man, Albert, tells a grisly tale of the further misdeeds of Mr Hyde and his ‘acquaintance’ - the tormented genius, Dr Jekyll.

Using specially designed self contained lighting effects, Hyde and Seek is a chilling and intimate story-telling experience: ghostly figures are glimpsed briefly before vanishing, characters appear out of nowhere, and what you can’t quite see becomes a lot more disconcerting than what you can.

Set in a long-abandoned theatre in Victorian London, the show has a theme of vaudeville running through it resulting in darkly comic song, dance, puppetry and even ventriloquism, which interweave with the story.

Written by Ben Oldfield (Cube). Created by Michael Tonkin-Jones (Spillikin) and Ciaran Clarke (Near-Ta Theatre). Performed by Michael Tonkin-Jones (Spillikin). Produced by Jasmine Cole Productions Ltd.

      Simon Evans : 'Genius'Simon Evans : 'Genius'

Simon Evans is one of the most exciting and distinctive talents to emerge on the comedy circuit in recent years. He is a familiar voice on BBC Radio 4 as a regular on The News Quiz, The Unbelievable Truth and Armando Iannucci's Charm Offensive.  Simon also contributes material to Lee Mack's BBC hit sit-com, Not Going Out.

Ever since he was a small boy, all Evans really wanted was to be recognised by the world as a man of genius. He has, until now, remained thwarted.

The world seems increasingly indifferent to true genius of any kind, let alone Evans’. Endlessly distracted by the trivial, we allow the classical tools of grammar, logic and rhetoric to lie unregarded in the shed of consciousness, rusting to a picturesque hue that would actually look really great on Instagram. But which filter?    Hmmm…
