Steve Knightley announces highly anticipated 2018 solo tour – and there’s a twist.As the frontman and songwriter of British folk heavyweights Show of Hands, Steve Knightley boasts an impressive back catalogue. He’s regularly cited by emerging artists as a source of inspiration.
But who has ignited and fuelled Knightley’s creative spark throughout his decades of craftsmanship?His 2018 solo tour ‘Songs & Stories’ seeks to answer that question. Of course the set list will be peppered with his now-classic gems such as ‘Cousin Jack’, ‘AIG’ and ‘Country Life’. But in a rare glimpse into his personal playlist, Knightley will also be paying tribute to artists such as Dylan, Carthy, Bowie, Springsteen, Tull and Radiohead, all of whom have influenced him greatly along the way.
Steve Knightley’s enduring appeal is perhaps in some part due to the fact that he is as at home in a folk club in East Devon as he is gracing the stage of a sell-out Royal Albert Hall concert.
The Show of Hands fanbase extends to luminaries such as Peter Gabriel, who has described them as ‘one of the great English bands’. With his songwriting and commentary more razor-sharp and relevant than ever, Knightley continues to remain at the cutting-edge of folk, roots and acoustic music.

Two of the British folk scenes most accomplished performers, and winners of the 2016 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Duo, Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman have graced stages the world over in a number of guises, with a number of groups and bands.
However, their intimacy and strength of passion is shown best as a duo. Stripped back to their simple, pure talent, with an ever-evolving, eclectic, repertoire, this husband & wife couple ensure a rare treat for any listener and music-lover who is lucky enough to see them in concert.
With a story that includes over 20 years of music making with the likes of Kate Rusby, Seth Lakeman, Cara Dillon, The Levellers, Billy Bragg, Frank Turner, Imelda May, Bellowhead and Show of Hands, Kathryn and Sean have consolidated themselves as pillars of modern British folk.
The Roberts / Lakeman name has become synonymous with "quality" throughout their musical careers, which started when they were signed to a major label as teenagers. For many years, Sean was kept busy touring the world with his brother Seth Lakeman's band, whilst Kathryn remained in Devon bringing up the couple’s twin daughters.
The pair took to the road and recording together again in 2012 and are now regarded as one of the top British folk duos working today; a claim borne out by the duos many awards and nominations.
In 2015, Kathryn was asked to join the iconic 70’s folk rock band Fotheringay thus stepping into the shoes of the late great Sandy Denny. She will tour with the band to promote their comprehensive Box Set released on Island Records.

If you've ever wanted to make the most of your spare time, start a new hobby, or return to an interest that you used to enjoy but haven't had the time for recently, then an Open Day at the St Austell Arts Centre, on Truro Road, might be just what you're looking for. It's an opportunity to find out more about the Arts Centre, and the groups that use it, in a friendly, informal atmosphere.
In the past year, over 30 different groups have used rooms at the Arts Centre to pursue their chosen leisure time activities. Many of them will be at the Open Day and will be happy to talk about their groups, promote their events and activities as well as signing-up new Members,
Groups including drama, yoga, dance and local radio have already confirmed their attendance. There will also be representatives from regional and national organisations including the St Austell U3a, St Austell Library, Restormel Arts' Festival of Fun, the Cornwall One Parent Support group and Volunteer Cornwall.
Teas, coffees, sandwiches and home-made cakes will be on sale, courtesy of the U3A and there will be a prize tombola and live music. There will also be an opportunity to have a look around the Arts Centre and its theatre and to buy tickets for many of its upcoming events, including Dr Phil Hammond, Dave Mynne's hilarious show “The Odyssey” and a new play by Graham Harvey, the writer of over 600 episodes of “The Archers”.
“No Finer Life” is Graham's new play, set at the end of the second world war, in the beautiful Suffolk countryside. The story moves between the 1940s and the current day, reflecting that the love of the countryside and the need to protect it and issues of national identity, are timeless.
Tickets for all these shows and others will be available to buy at the Open Day.
The St Austell Arts Centre is also looking for volunteers to help including bar-work, front-of-house, caretaking, refurbishing (painting), maintenance / DIY and administration.

Kneehigh Theatre founder-member, Dave Mynne is at it again!
Fresh from playing Grandad in Kneehigh's "Fup", at Heligan's Asylum, last summer, Dave is now back on the road with his latest one-man show - and, this time, it's all Greek to him!
Having given his own unique twists to the Gothic horror of Dracula and Dickens' Great Expectations, Dave now brings his own epic storytelling talents to put a new spin on "The Odyssey", based (very loosely!) on Homer's classic tale.
Odysseus, also known by the Latin name Ulysses, is the legendary Greek king of Ithaca and the hero of our story. It recounts his 10-year struggle to return home after the Trojan War.
During his journey, Odysseus battles mystical creatures and faces the wrath of the gods. His wife, Penelope, and his son, Telemachus, stave off suitors vying for Penelope's hand and Ithaca's throne long enough for Odysseus to return.
The Odyssey ends as Odysseus returns home, wins a contest to prove his identity, slaughters the suitors, and retakes the throne of Ithaca.
Sexy Sirens, a six-headed monster, Gods and the one-eyed Cyclops are all deftly brought to life by Dave's remarkable ability to become anyone - and anything! - in the blink of an eye!
His performances are masterclasses in acting and the art of storytelling.
As with his other shows, Dave enlists Simon Harvey to direct and, this time, enlists fellow Kneehigh colleage Anna Maria-Murphy (co-writer of Trystan and Yseult), for added poetic licence!
Suitable for 12 year olds and over, "The Odyssey" is a story more exciting than excitement itself!

The Kernow King knows how to get laughs out of seeing the funny side of the world around us here in the Duchy.
Referencing nearby towns with lofty ambitions (Pool is the Future), popular characters (‘naughty’ Margaret from Ann’s Pasties) and familiar experiences for many Cornish folk (shopping in Trago Mills), he tickled the funny bones of people looking for some regional entertainment.
The self-proclaimed King of Kernow has been touring for the last six years, and boy, has he come a long way. From pasties to dogging, politics to dialect, there isn't a subject matter that the King hasn't talked and laughed about.
Following performances at Glastonbury Festival, Port Eliot, and even Australia, the humble King is back for one night only with his Greatest Hits (plus a little extra new stuff!) for a mammoth night of Cornish laughs!

All tickets £7.50, including a cream tea.Today, 16th April, marks two very special Anniversaries: it is the date of Charlie Chaplin's birthday and it also marks 80 years, to the day, of the first-ever public screening of Laurel & Hardy's classic comedy “Way Out West”, the film in which the loveable duo sing their Number One Hit Record “The Trail of the Lonesome Pine”
Both films give their own unique take on the quest for Gold, in the old US West, with hilarious consequences!
The Gold Rush (1925) is the quintessential Chaplin/Little Tramp film, with a balance of slapstick comedy and pantomime, social satire, and emotional and dramatic moments of tenderness. It was Chaplin's own personal favourite film, that showcases the classic Tramp character as a romantic idealist and lone gold prospector at the turn of the century, with his cane, derby, distinctive walk, tight shabby suit, and moustache.
Classic scenes include the starvation scene of two cabin-marooned prospectors boiling and fastidiously eating a stewed shoe, the Tramp's cabin-mate deliriously imagining his companion as a large chicken, the teetering cabin on the edge of a cliff, and Chaplin's lonely fantasised New Year's Eve party (with the famous dancing dinner rolls routine) when he waits for a girl who never comes.
In this world where shoe laces become spaghetti and bread rolls become ballet shoes, Chaplin, the alchemist, turns gold into poetry. Often named in polls, not only as Chaplin's finest comedy, but the finest silent comedy ever, the film is as fresh and as funny as it ever was.
Way Out West (1935) has the added bonus of having the wonderful James Finlayson in the cast, as the appropriately named crooked saloonkeeper, Mickey Finn!Stan's daughter Lois Laurel and Ollie's daughter Lucille Hardy always insisted that Way Out West was the favourite film of both their fathers. In addition to the memorable Lonesome Pine song, the duo perform one of the most enchanting dances ever seen on film, to the song At The Ball, That's All.
The typically strange and wonderful plot sees Easterners Laurel and Hardy travel via mule to the old western town of Brushwood Gulch. Their mission is to deliver a deed to a gold mine to one Mary Roberts, as bequeathed to her by her late father.
Never having seen Mary Roberts, The Boys are duped by Mickey Finn, a shifty saloon owner, into thinking his wife Lola is Mary. They turn over the deed to the crooked couple, but realise their error when they encounter the real Mary.
Breaking into the saloon at night to recover the deed, they make a shambles of the place, wind up with their mule on the roof, tie Finn up in a chandelier with bedsheets - and finally succeed in their mission!
This really is a one-off opportunity to see these two fantastic films on the “Big Screen”

This September, Touch Theatre goes on tour again, this time with a comic drama that deals with adult themes.
The biological clock is ticking for Brodie, a determined, focussed but detached Professor of Linguistics.
The chosen donor ( interests include stand up comedy and kayaking ) has turned out a success, girlfriend is happy with the idea and all is set to ensure that Brodie’s superior genes are passed on.
But life doesn’t always fit neatly into researched plans and a trip to the zoo and a connection with a talking ape look set to change Brodie’s outlook on life for ever.

Enchanting one-woman show, based on the works of Jane Austen.
Courtship is Kim Hicks’ longest running one-woman show. In the years since Kim first created the show, in 1981, Jane Austen’s novels have been turned into an array of film and TV spectaculars and her popularity with an ever increasing audience has grown year on year.
What is often lost though, in these adaptations, is the delightfully rich voice of Austen herself as narrator – not so with Courtship.
All the extracts in the show are unabridged, each picked to reflect an aspect of this ongoing theme in Austen’s novels and often chosen to highlight her excellence as a remarkably fine writer of comedy.
Courtship was the first one-woman Jane Austen show and has outlasted those that followed for good reason: Kim’s infectious delight in the exquisite perfection of Austen’s works. The show captivates its audience from start to finish.

Volunteering is a great way to meet new people and to have fun.
Here are just a few ways you can help us!Front of House – “Tickets, please…”
Most of our volunteers help out on the night of performances, as Front of House staff. It takes 3 – 5 volunteers to staff each show we put on.
Front of house staff are crucial members of our team, providing a welcoming face to greet our audience, tear tickets, help people to find seats and make sure the building is safe and well-organised during performances, as well as tidying up after the public have gone home. They need to be here an hour before the performance starts and be able to stay until the audience has left.
The only qualifications you need are a friendly smile and a willingness to help. Your job will be to make the audience feel welcome, have a good time and send them home with a smile on their face.Bar work – “Service with a smile…”
If you would like to help out working behind our bar, we are always looking for more people to support our busy bar team. You don’t need any previous bar experience, but it can be quite a demanding job on busy show nights, so you need to be prepared to be on your feet a lot!
You’ll need to be able to work a cash register – but, we can teach you that! – and, if you’re able to commit more time, make occasional trips to the cash and carry to make sure we have all the stock we need.
Do let us know if you are interested in working behind the bar, and keeping it clean. The bar staff are usually needed from an hour before show time until the audience has gone and everything is tidied up.Sprucers – “You can help us clean up!”
We always need willing hands to keep the place clean, do routine maintenance work and generally make us a clean, attractive and welcoming place to visit.Lighting Box – “Sound, lights, action!”
If you’re interested in the technical side of putting on shows, then we’re interested in hearing from you!
We’re looking to build up an enthusiastic and committed team to help with lighting, sound, maintenance of equipment and all other technical aspects of running out theatre.Admin support – “You’re just my type…!”
If you’re a good organiser, with admin skills, you might like to help run our volunteer rota, or help to manage our Friends scheme. So, if you “Excel” at spreadsheets and have a love of databases, please let us know!Publicity – “Read all about it!”
It would be great to have a small team of people who can help distribute leaflets and posters. We also need someone to contact organisations to interest groups to come to our events.

'There's No Country' is an exploration of the complexities of immigration, written and devised by the company.
The piece is inspired by the topic of immigration with a particular focus on Cornwall. It's a tale of belonging and integration which will include live singing and physical theatre.When you leave your country, you remember to pack your toothbrush but be careful not to leave half your soul behind. Mother Tongue is gentle but she's gone now, can you still truly express yourself without her warm embrace?
Lines on a map, laws in a court, or even the widest oceans don't change the fact that I, like you, am human.

If the dismal autumn weather has plunged you into gloom, come and have a laugh with Toppers Theatre Group when they present John Godber's comedy, 'September in the Rain' at the St Austell Arts Centre.Jack and Liz, a Yorkshire coal miner and his equally gritty wife, have their annual September holiday in Blackpool every year.
We share their journeys, their ups and downs, and their meetings with Mavis, Sam and Mary.
They take us to Tussaud’s, on the famous Blackpool donkeys, the big dipper, and, of course, into the Tower, on this funny, irritating, nostalgic and poignant adventure.Straight off a successful tour in West Yorkshire, Roy Byrom plays Yorkshire miner Jack Monroe, and Julie Johnston his long suffering wife Liz as they go on their annual holiday to Blackpool over the years - through tears, laughter, ice cream and sandcastles.
September in the Rain charts the life of Yorkshire couple Jack and Liz told through their annual summer holiday jaunt across the Pennines to Blackpool, which has been a ritual for over 40 years.
It’s the golden age of donkey rides, talent contests, saucy postcards, stripey deckchairs, ice cream, rolled-up trousers and knotted hankies.
John Godber's hilarious comedy conjures up this lost world so vividly you will almost feel the sand in your socks and hear the rain bouncing off your pac-a-mac.
Jack is a strong-minded but good-hearted Yorkshire miner who cannot abide dirt and mess in any other part of his life.
Liz is a Liverpudlian housewife who sometimes cannot understand her husband’s reluctance to hold her hand.
They bicker, fall out, become friends again.
Even after the years have passed, the pair are still very much in love with each other and Blackpool.
