St Austell Players: “Bouncers & Shakers”

St Austell Players present Bouncers by John Godber, directed by Kim Rowe, and Shakers by John Godber and Jane Thornton, directed by Rose Lancaster.

Godber’s 80s classic Bouncers and the, later added, sister play Shakers (co-written with Jane Thornton) were originally penned to expose the dark underbelly of 80s night-life in Britain.
This production has been revised for a more modern audience, without forgetting its working class, social context.

Four Bouncers. Four cocktail waitresses. One Double-Bill of hard-hitting, hilarious physical comedy !

Through outrageous observations, colourful characters, and lively, emotional snapshots, Bouncers and Shakers explores the shadowy underbelly of Britain after dark, as seen through the eyes of four cocktail waitresses and the men on the club door.

Cue giggly girls, pogo-punks, Mr & Mrs Trendy and “lads on the razz” tittering at the thought of a ‘Long Slow Comfortable Screw’ as Bouncers and Shakers offers a fascinating view of the reality behind the pulsating beats of the dance floor and the not-so-glitzy-glamour lurking beyond the plastic palms and Pina Coladas.

Please note performances contain explicit language and adult themes.

Doors Open and Licensed Bar from 7.00pm. The Plays start at 7.30pm

Film : ‘St Just Ordinalia – 2021’ ( Cert. PG )

Film : St Just OrdinaliaFilm : ‘St. Just Ordinalia’
(Cert. PG)

In September, 2021, at the historic site of Plen an Gwari, St Just, there was a series of open-air repertory performances of all three Ordinalia plays (Origo Mundi, The Passion and The Resurrection).

The epic production gave audiences an opportunity, if desired, to join in with Cornish Language, dancing and sea-song sessions, watch Cornish wrestling, listen to the history of St Just’s Plen an Gwari and to wander along the town trails and heritage walks.

The cast perfectly created and delivered the aim of the original plays to impress the Christian bible stories on the local population.  With creative, moving, dramatic, witty and farcical scenes adapted from the original by local playwright Pauline Sheppard, the actors, supported by a 34-strong choir, performed at the top of their game.

Over 150 costumes were designed and made for the cast. A team of 27 set builders helped to create and build the set and, in all, over 230 volunteers helped to make the dream a reality.

Watch the trailer for this epic production, below.

The film version being shown of this unique occasion includes scenes from each of the three plays, complete with an introduction, interviews and other special features.

This is your opportunity to re-live this remarkable event, or to experience for the first time, this extraordinary celebration of Cornish heritage and culture.

‘The spirit of St Just’s Ordinalia should be bottled up and made available on the NHS!’ ; Ted Lean, Project Director

‘This was a successful, major community event that could not fail to arouse intense admiration and not a little envy from any outsider’ ; Professor Sally Mackey, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama

The Countrymen – Postponed. New date TBC

The Countrymen

Sorry!  This Show has been Postponed. Watch out for an update, they’re trying to organise a new date for later this year!

It’s difficult to find a musical genre that would fully describe The Countrymen but Cornish Folk Rock Harmony is reasonably close.
Six seasoned musicians with tight four-part harmony vocals and a token Cornishman.
With a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs, as well as some original material.
Interspersed with the occasional pop cover to lighten the mood when required, there is no mistaking that to a man, they love their county with a passion.

The band was formed at their local, The Countryman Inn near Launceston, which is where the band’s name originates.  They soon found a mutual love of singing in harmony and almost accidentally developed a strong reputation for their emphasis on Cornishness in the repertoire.
They have been fortunate to have performed at some great festivals including Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival, Bridport Folk Festival, Looe Saves The Day, Little Orchard Cider Festival, Falmouth Oyster Festival and Falmouth Week.
Recently they have been adding their own concerts to the diary which have proved highly successful and they are now expanding the number and distance of these ‘special’ gigs into 2020.

In addition to offering quality entertainment on stage, they have also been busy in the recording studio and have released two EPs to date, Cornish Lads Vol.1 and not unsurprisingly, Cornish Lads Vol.2.  These are available for download and streaming on the usual websites, although you can listen to a sample of each right here.
They have also produced their first CD, “Trees on the Hill” featuring most of their Cornish material to date and are hard at work on their second album due for release in 2020.
